The Blood Orange Old Fashioned. Just sweet enough not to overwhelm the Bourbon, even hardcore Old Fashioned enthusiasts will like this cocktail.
I purchased some really excellent blood oranges at the store this morning. I debated making a Blood Orange Hemmingway Daiquiri but rum didn’t sound appealing, I was more in the mood for a Bourbon Old Fashioned. So I thought ‘what the Hell, it probably won’t kill us’. Although I had two of these cocktails before photographing my Navy Beans, Mustard Greens, and Country Style Ribs recipe, and the photos turned out surprisingly well.
Hardcore ‘Old Fashioned’ enthusiasts (like myself) prefer to muddle the bitters and a sugar cube. But for this Old Fashioned, I used simple syrup since I was already bastardizing the Old Fashioned by adding orange juice to it.
Blood oranges have a beautiful and distinctive color. The dark flesh also has a unique flavor compared to other citrus fruits. The orange is accented with a hint of raspberry flavor with a stronger aroma and slightly bitter taste
Here is my Blood Orange Cocktail recipe:

Sour and shi**y. 20 year old Pappy tastes better straight.

Well, one thing I think we all can agree on, never, never-ever make a mixed drink with 20-year-old Pappy. It is better straight.
