My 5-minute Simple Tartar Sauce recipe (also spelled Tartare sauce) is super quick and easy and it’s way better than anything you can buy in a jar. I’ve tried probably 20 different recipes for tartar sauce, some of them are quite intensive. Everything from making your own mayo, hard-boiled yokes, etc. And the thing is, the homemade tartare sauce is a pretty basic sauce, it shouldn’t take 30-minutes, the recipe should only take around 5 minutes.
I make my tartar sauce recipe starting with a base of mayonnaise, sweet relish, and Dijon-style mustard. Traditionally there are chopped pickles, olives, capers, and fresh herbs in a tartare sauce recipe. However, my recipe is not that fussy. I like that this tartare sauce is quick, easy, and delicious. Although tartar sauce is often served with seafood, I love to use it with vegetables as well. I make an amazing recipe of boiled potatoes and green beans tossed with tartare sauce, it’s an amazing side dish with salmon!
My Tartar sauce recipe is creamy, tart, and sweet. It’s one of my favorite sauces with seafood and vegetables!
Tartar Sauce Recipe Ingredients
- Mayonnaise: I prefer to use good quality, real mayonnaise for this recipe.
- Sweet Relish: I like the flavor of sweet relish in this recipe. However, chopped pickles, capers, and fresh herbs make an excellent substitute, but remember, this is a 5-minute recipe.
- Coarse Ground Mustard: The mustard is a nice contrast to the creaminess of the mayonnaise and the sweetness of the relish.
- White Wine Vinegar: The vinegar adds a nice little sourness to the sauce. A good substitute is lemon juice.
- Salt and Black Pepper: The seasonings are simple and straightforward. You don’t need anything elaborate for this simple 5-minute recipe.
What to Serve With Homemade Tartar Sauce
Cedar Smoked Salmon: The smokiness of the salmon and this sauce go together perfectly. The cedar planks infuse a really delicate smoked flavor into the salmon leaving it tender, flaky, and juicy. Smoking salmon on cedar planks could not be easier.
Pub-Style Fish and Chips: A great condiment for any type of fish fry, but always a favorite with my pub-style fish and chips!
Frozen Fish Sticks: Ok, I’m a big kid at heart, and occasionally, I still like my frozen fish sticks and tater tots!
